Redirects have become an indispensable complement for any online store. These tools serve, among other things, to notify the main search engines that the URL of my page has changed and that they should look at this other location instead.
Changing the URL can be temporary or permanent . Imagine that you need to boost a certain part of your website: the shop during the Christmas campaign, for example. An effective solution would be to set up a redirection from your domain to the shop and thus filter all traffic through there.
Continuing with the series of guides that we propose from Línea Gráfica, it is time to address the use of 301, 302 and 303 redirects to boost our eCommerce to the place it deserves. I can tell you in advance that there is no loss, but even so it is advisable to thoroughly study the situation of your website to decide on one of these three solutions.
When should I use 301, 302 or 303 redirects in PrestaShop?
Once we have clarified what redirects are, it is time to choose the best time to use them.- 301 Redirects : This type of redirects correspond to URLs that have been permanently changed. In other words, obsolete pages that, through redirection, focus the search engines on other URLs. This can be done to change the domain, to make the link more user-friendly or to update content taking advantage of the positioning of the old page.
- 302 redirects : URLs that are temporarily moved to another location. You should use them whenever there are problems on any of the pages (404, out of stock, wrong product...) and we need to redirect while we fix it, or in situations where we are interested in promoting a certain profile of the website. For example; through the link " store.mydomain.com " redirect to " store.mydomain.com/blackfriday ". All temporary, remember.
- 303 redirects : Location changes made through the .htaccess file of our PrestaShop store. With this redirect we communicate to search engines to pay attention to another web page through that link. Unlike 301 and 302, the 303 redirect is not used to replace the originally requested URL, its main purpose is to redirect a request to an independent web page.
